I can't believe it is almost a year since I finished the previous step on the interactive project! The big B project I was working on last Summer and Autumn took a lot of my time, but more about that when it's time! The Spring sun got me inspired to shake the dust off this project and finally take it to an end! Again, Mr Random picked a suggestion by the lovely embroiderer Anita, who suggested a little mouse to accompany the cat. Since we had a rope I decided the mouse had to become a tight-rope dancer, an idea backed up by my 7 year old daughter :) So here she is, with tulle skirt and all!
Now I only have to quilt and bind this little piece of soft art we've created together and I will draw a winner among all the people who has come with one of the ten first suggestions at any stage. If you are not familiar with this project you can read about it in my previous posts and see the whole process in pictures my flickr stream.
I will give 10 more people the chance to be in the draw, I need some ideas for the quilting, so if you please, I'd love to hear your ideas!
Even if this project has taken a million years, I have loved the process very much and am thinking of following it up in some way, but we'll see about that, first I need to get this thing quilted! Thanks for your help everyone!
This is such an inspiring project! I like the idea of quilting in a little breeze.

wow!! what an amazing piece!!! i really love that little mouse, so sweet & clever!
& as for quilting...what about some texture on her pretty dress? and on those clouds & on the birds. maybe some swirlys in the clouds, would be pretty.
all in all, you are clearly the expert here! i can't wait to see it all finished! what an accomplishment!

I remember the start of this little quilt ..I simply love the layout and the black stitching. It's on my to do list. See...you're further ahead than me, mine hasn't even come out of my head let alone off the shelf to be finished. The mouse is fan-tas-tic. Well done Katja. I can't help with the quilting design as this is what always stumps me too. Thanks for the chance to win. Ann In Canada

I was just thinking about this little quilt and was wondering how it was coming along. I'm so glad you brought this back for one last comment. I just love the artwork and find this to be such a precious creation. One lady commented on putting french knots in the sunflowers. I like that idea, it would really complete the look of the sunflowers. Maybe quilting around the birds, cat, quilt, bike, socks, little girl, etc. keeping it simple and making the items pop up out of the picture.
Posted by: Karen | 31 March 2010 at 09:03 AM
oh wow, I love it! I would try to keep it simple..maybe evoke the rest of the landscape...grass, clouds, etc?
Posted by: Kristin | 29 March 2010 at 09:21 PM
This is so adorable. I think you should add hearts, the kind that are on your signature.
Posted by: Shasta | 28 March 2010 at 05:10 PM
I love it! I think that the quilting should be simple. Perhaps just quilt more flowers in the garden, another cloud, some more washing on the line. Suggestions in the background echoing the fabric picture.

Given that you have clouds and an umbrella, and there is clearly some wind, I think a few raindrops would do the trick for quilting. Rain can be quite happy if it's a lovely spring drizzle.

I like this project very much, so I'm a little sad it's about to end ... About the quilting: Since my spider idea never made it in the picture, why not do the quilting in the shape of a spiderweb?! OK, I have never in my life even attempted to make a quilt, so I think you will have a much better idea!

this truly is a stunning piece of work! that quilt hanging from the clothesline gets me, each time I look at it. and that tiny little tightrope-walking mouse? so cute! my vote for quilting is also to keep it minimal, so as to not detract from the gorgeousness you already have going on here. I picture some abstract curling lines.... as has been said previously - something to evoke the feeling of wind. Can't wait to see how it ends up!

I would make little wrinkles in her dress, put some quilting lines in the quilt, some little french knots in the sunflowers, etc. just simple little lines here and there to add to the look of the quilt, I think alot of quilting would take away from the design and IT IS SOOOOO CUTE. I LOVE IT. Thanks for sharing.

I LOVE how this has turned out Kajsa! From the very first motive to the very last one. It doesn't matter that it has taken time. Good things usually takes time. It has been so much fun to be a part of it, following the development. I'm almost sad that it is soon over. I hope you consider repeating and doing a similar thing in the future.
Wishing you a good weekend!

It looks wonderful. I think too much quilting will detract from the quilt, so maybe some simple echo quilting? If you're handquilting, I think a grid (either straight or diagonal) in the background would look beautiful.

Somehow came across your blog and just love this quilt top. For quilting I have a suggestion: quilt it with the names of the people that gave you your "suggested objects" or the objects as words themselves. Maybe not in too contrasting of a thread so it's not overpowering. I can also imagine the word for example 'cloud' and then a cloud pic in a continous line quilting. Great job and what a beautiful end result!

The girl looks like me as a child!!!! It is darling, I had a little red bike like that too! I would quilt around the items. Broken lines coming down vertically, or horizontally. Very sparse. The design makes me smile!

The little mouse is wonderful!! This interactive project is great!!
Posted by: Silvia | 24 March 2010 at 08:51 PM
This turned out so well! I'm in love with the little mouse. Cute!
Posted by: anina | 24 March 2010 at 04:21 PM
While I have no entry for the quilting ideas, I really wanted to comment and say how wonderful I think this piece is. I love the interactive nature of it, and the cat and mouse are just adorable! What a fun inspiration! I look forward to seeing the finished work. Whoever wins this will be very lucky.
Posted by: Kathy | 24 March 2010 at 02:37 PM
I think that's the most beautiful thing you've ever created, and it's got some tough competition! It really tells a story, doesn't it?
I would quilt it with gentle wavy lines, like a soft breeze.
Whoever wins is going to be one lucky person!!!
Posted by: Katy | 24 March 2010 at 01:23 PM
Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever seen on a blog. Amazing!
Posted by: Clare Mansell | 24 March 2010 at 12:02 PM
Be stil my beating heart! Oh such loveliness! I think the appliqued picture is so gorgeous that the quilting should be very simple, I would outline quilt the major elements.
Posted by: Lyndy Young | 24 March 2010 at 08:24 AM
i love every element of this little quilt--so very cute! no one else has suggested this idea, so even though you've had more than 10 comments already, I'll put mine forward--how about a white-on-white sun with sashiko rays stitched out to the edges of the picture (but not covering any of the appliqued elements)?

Random wind for the quilting design.
Posted by: kathyh | 24 March 2010 at 04:12 AM
It's so beautiful and striking I don't think it should be quilted very much at all, perhaps just a simple stitch outline around the main features might work. I don't think you should do anything too fussy to it. The cat and the mouse are simply divine, a work of art.
Posted by: Katie | 24 March 2010 at 03:29 AM
Swirls like the wind is moving. Or waves ending in curls. Even random loops like little cursive o's with over exaggerated lines connecting them.
I love how it's turned out so far.
Posted by: K. Anne | 24 March 2010 at 02:58 AM
It's really lovely. I'd like to see the quilting look like gusts of wind to add to the movement in this beautiful piece.
Posted by: Munaiba | 24 March 2010 at 12:18 AM
Oh Kajsa - it's beautiful!! I think a freeform stippled type of quilting would look lovely.

I think less will be more on the quilting here. Perhaps just dots every few centimeters...
Cant express how I love this creation!
Posted by: Sandra | 23 March 2010 at 09:56 PM
OMG that mouse is tutu perfect. MUCH better than my suggestion of a squirrel. This is so unique!
My suggestion for the quilting would be sparse wavy lines, evoking a windy day. Not hurricane force, just a gentle breeze. Kajsa, you are an incredible artist!
Posted by: Allie | 23 March 2010 at 09:55 PM
That mouse is tooooo cute! I loved to follow this project and I would have loved to be in the final drawing.
I think a sole simple line, maybe even quilted by hand, around the appliqued shapes, will have them pop out.
Posted by: nicolette | 23 March 2010 at 09:12 PM
I agree with comments about subtle quilting. Something to echo movement. Perhaps independent swirls, clouds, or starbursts. Thanks for bringing this back!
Posted by: Cheryl Arkison | 23 March 2010 at 08:50 PM
Even if it's been a year, I will suggest the same thing as I did last year. Where are the are the herrings??? :-)
Posted by: zenzhey | 23 March 2010 at 08:30 PM
What a beautiful piece of work! How brilliant! I wouldn't make the quilting too busy (although if you don't already have an idea for backing a back that matches the tiny quilt on the front would be adorable. If not just a "strip" of blocks that are similar on the back.)
Best of Luck!
Posted by: C. Michele | 23 March 2010 at 08:15 PM
Awesome! I think very sparse quilting would be the best. Maybe just a few horizontal wavy lines across the entire piece.
Posted by: JM | 23 March 2010 at 08:15 PM
I love this piece so much! (and it has inspired a raft of "copiers")
For the quilting, I would do a line or two of closely spaced outline quilting (in exactly the same colour as the background fabric) around each large object; and then straight, closely spaced, vertical lines for the quilting for the rest of the piece.
Posted by: MsKit | 23 March 2010 at 07:34 PM
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!
And the mouse... WOW!
Thank you ^_^
Fabrics in the same colors in a very simple quilt to highlight the central work...what do you think?
Hugs and kisses****

i would keep the quilting fairly simple as the design is so unique. Why not different sized circles as and where there is the room so as not to cover any applique?

It's looking amazing! What about little spiralling circles for the quilting? Whatever you do it will look stunning! Your acrobatic mouse is the perfect finishing touch!

Something that evokes wind - echoing the above...because that clothesline clearly shows movement...

i love this quilt!! how about loose swirls?? nothing to heavy to detract from the figures!

Posted by: gill | 23 March 2010 at 06:28 PM
This is AMAZING work! I love it. Congrats Katja! I suggest you to quilt a squirrel near the bike drinking a cup of tea or lying down looking to the sky or knitting a long, colored scarve!
Posted by: Ana Mota | 23 March 2010 at 06:23 PM
I would quilt a swirly stipple in the background like "wind"
Posted by: Kimberly Roberts | 23 March 2010 at 06:21 PM
And i am thinking about vertical lines, a bit wavy....
Love the look of it, so many fun details! Big fan!
Posted by: Marit | 23 March 2010 at 06:21 PM
Oh, I adore your little mouse! What a beautiful piece of art. As for quilting...hmm...I love the idea of some clouds, grass and additional flowers. Perhaps some echo quilting? Sorry I'm not too much help...
Posted by: Barb | 23 March 2010 at 06:21 PM
It has become the sweetest, most original 'community' project Kajsa! Love it. Quilting...hmmm, I have a few ideas. (1) 'tie' the quilt in the line with coloured floss by making a knot and snipping the tails on the front of the quilt, (2) echo quilting with white thread the clouds & sunflower (3) stitch the ditch around the girl, birds and cat (4) french knot in the bike tire hubs. I really think it doesn't need a lot of quilting...there is so much fabulous fabric action already!!
Posted by: Krista | 23 March 2010 at 06:03 PM
This is so lovely. Your mouse is the only one I can look at.
What about quilting four-leaf clovers and daisies?
Posted by: Virginie | 23 March 2010 at 06:03 PM
I love this so, so, much! Gorgeous. And I'm enticed to comment: What about quilting in the shame shape as your fluffy clouds. I think that could work...!
